The “Rand” is the official currency for South Africa. Most items are priced in Rands and cents where 100 cents equals one Rand.
Will my credit card work in South Africa?
For the main areas in South Africa, your Visa and Master Cards will work perfectly. However, if you are travelling to the more remote areas e.g. overlanding, then cash might be required. You can also link your credit card to “Zapper” app on your phone in South Africa. Selected stores accept this payment mechanisms and can save you time during when paying your bill.
Tips start at 10% but it is more common to use 12,5%. Obviously, you are welcome to tip higher.
Be aware that many restaurants add a tip to the bill once you sit 10 or more people. Make sure to check your bill.
ATMs are available at most malls and gas stations.
Also, if you are shopping at a grocery store such as SPAR, Checkers or Pick n Pay, you can ask them to draw cash at the till.
If you need to exchange you currency, the international airports all have forex desk and major banks. They will be quote and perform the exchange on site. Major banks in the malls also have facilities to help you.
Make sure to also ask your hotel before travelling because some may have facilities available.
